The impact of light on human health and happiness has long been studied. Lighting can have a big effect on how people operate within their surroundings, ranging from how they interact with others, to how they feel both physically and mentally. Now, more than ever, standard LED light sources are available in a wider variety of colors and white light color temperatures making it possible to choose a static color that fits a particular application.
But what about times when the color of the light needs to be adjusted – where a single fixed color or color temperature does not satisfy the need? That’s where tunable lighting comes in.
THE COLOR OF LIGHT
From a very young age we learn that mixing 2 colors together will produce a different, 3rd color. Like the paint of our nursery school days, colored light may also be blended together to yield a variety of different colors. By using proper light sources and control systems, it is not only possible to produce light in the full spectrum of the rainbow, but also varying shades of white light, from cool white to warm white and everything in between. Using LED Lighting technology, these colors can be adjusted in a single luminaire both manually, or continuously via specialized control systems.
WHY IS TUNABLE LIGHTING IMPORTANT?
The ability to adjust the color of light can be useful in a variety of situations. Trials have shown that lighting in office buildings can have major impacts on employee engagement and performance. Having lighting that mimics the circadian rhythm of natural daylight as the sun rises and sets throughout the day, can lead to healthier and happier employees. Along these same lines, white lighting can be adjusted to promote learning by keeping students alert and attentive throughout the day.
In the hospitality sector, having the ability to change the color and intensity of light can help promote energy and inspiration, or relaxation and comfort, depending on what the time of day calls for.
Full color tunable lighting can be used to attract attention and highlight architectural features in historical, or highly designed buildings.
In arenas, sporting venues, recreational facilities and stores (and everything in between), colored lighting can add a unique twist and a memorable experience to the guests.
The uses for tunable lighting are wide ranging and varied, and PMC Lighting has solutions that can be implemented into just about every one of our luminaires with LED sources. From linear to downlights, from curved to troffers, PMC Lighting has the fixture and light sources to address both your tunable and design needs. With custom design and manufacturing capabilities even the most demanding applications are generally within our reach.
PMC LIGHTING’S AURA TUNABLE SOLUTIONS
AURA WHITE TUNABLE (AWT) SOLUTIONS
Capable of adjusting white light CCT output only. These systems do not have any capability to display colors. Available for linear and point source applications.
AURA COLOR TUNABLE (ACT) SOLUTIONS
RGB systems are capable of adjusting colored light output. These systems do not have any capability to display white light in any CCT. RGBW systems are capable of adjusting colored light output and have non-tunable white light output. These systems have a fixed CCT white output. Available for linear and point source applications.
AURA COLOR/WHITE TUNABLE (ACWT) SOLUTIONS
Capable of adjusting colored light output and have fully tunable white light output. Available for linear and point source applications.
AURA WARM DIM (AWD) SOLUTIONS
Capable of adjusting white light CCT output only in direct relation to the dimming level. As the light output is dimmed the CCT automatically becomes warmer. These systems do not have any capability to display colors. Available for linear and point source applications.
Combining these Tunable Lighting solutions with a wide variety of control methods that are particularly suited to the application yields a wide range of product solutions from PMC Lighting that can address your tunable lighting needs.
